The 24/7 Big Listen

Every year on the 24th July, Samaritans branches in the UK and Republic of Ireland hold local events to raise awareness that Samaritans are here to listen to anyone who is struggling to cope, at any time of the day or night.

This year our wellbeing message has been Time to Talk and practices around the group have been introducing this into their huddles to help break down the stigma.

Attached is a quick guide on how to listen using the SHUSH technique: click here

My Whole Self

In recognition of Pride month and our recent training with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England, this month our wellbeing focus is “My Whole Self”. My Whole Self is the campaign for workplace culture change from MHFA England. It aims to create a workplace culture where people have the safety and freedom to choose which parts of their identity they share at work, without fear of judgment.

By making time to talk and celebrating our differences, we can ensure we all feel safe in the places we work.

Mental Health Awareness Week 10th - 17th May 2021

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. Championed by The Mental Health Foundation (www.mentalhealth.org.uk) the theme of the week is “nature”. Nature is so central to our psychological and emotional health, that it’s almost impossible to realise good mental health for all without a greater connection to the natural world. Spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing. For example, doing things like growing food or flowers, exercising outdoors or being around animals can have lots of positive effects.

How do you share the message? How do you use nature to support your own mental health? Share your ideas with us at wellbeing@hakimgroup.co.uk

If you are feeling overwhelmed by your current stresses in life, make time to talk. Please contact us at wellbeing@hakimgroup.co.uk or call Simply Health on 0800 975 3356

Stress Awareness Month - 1st - 30th April 2021

April is stress awareness month. Across the month we will be raising the awareness of different types of stress and providing you with the tools to help combat them.

This week we’re looking at the stress container. Each of us have a different size stress container which fills up at different rates. If our container continues to fill, there’ a risk it can overflow. Thankfully, we also have a tap which helps us empty our stress container through positive activities such as exercise, reading and meditating, but negative activities such as excessive eating or drinking may block this tap.

Make time to talk if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You can speak to your shark, fish or buddy or email wellbeing@hakimgroup.co.uk  If you want to speak to somebody impartial, contact Simply Health on 0800 975 3356

Nutrition & Hydration - 15th - 19th March 2021

This month our focus is on Nutrition and Hydration as part of our wellbeing calendar for 2021.

We all know we should eat well and drink plenty of fluids but do we really understand why? We’ve put together a short video with some hints and tips on how to eat well and hydrate properly.

We’ve also put together some fact sheets to help you understand how staying hydrated and taking on the right nutrition can benefit you.

If you need extra help with diet or exercise please visit HG Giftbox where the Wellbeing Centre can offer recipe ideas and exercise suggestions or contact Simply Health on 0800 975 3356 where you can speak to trained dieticians who can get you on the right path to a healthier you. If there’s somebody you want to talk to at HQ then please contact wellbeing@hakimgroup.co.uk

Time to Talk - 4th February 2021

Our spotlight for February is “Time to Talk”. Mental health problems affect one in four of us, yet too many people are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless because of this. Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to be more open about mental health – to talk, to listen, to change lives.

Our current world has become more digital with most of our interactions being through video calls, messaging and social media. Be aware of changes in behaviour of those around you, they may be in need of some support. A small conversation about mental health has the power to make a big difference.

We know that the more conversations we have, the more myths we can bust and barriers we can break down, helping to end the isolation, shame and worthlessness that too many of us with mental health problems are made to feel.

There are many fantastic charities out there who can support those feeling overwhelmed including www.mind.orgwww.samaritans.org and www.thecalmzone.net

As a member of the HG family you also have access to a helpline through Simply Health: 0800 975 3356 This is a free phone number and available 24/7. They can help with anything you need support with from a mental health crisis, assistance with weight loss, stopping smoking, coping with loss and financial concerns to name a few. The helpline is 100% confidential, nobody will know you’ve rang it but that phone call could make all the difference.

Alternatively, if you just want somebody to talk to then please contact your Shark, Fish, Buddy or reach out to us at wellbeing@hakimgroup.co.uk

Nobody should have to suffer in silence, we’ll break down the stigma of mental health together
